The Project

Swarm (Simple Workload Allocation and Resource Management) was written for college managers to simplify workload management.

Collating data from multiple sources and systems (including Research data, Teaching data, Supervision/Mentoring data etc), the system intelligently calculates everyones workload across their academic year, and presents the data in an easy and graphical intuitive user interface.

The system allows generation of reports, filtering, comparative analysis, cost analysis and data exports into other systems.

Why use Swarm?

  • View all of your disparate data sources in once easy-to-manage system
  • At a glance dashboards give insight into departmental workloads and patterns
  • Improve transparency across your institution
  • Colleges & Departments can micro-manage their own information and data
  • Export data and generate reports which can be used for
    • Informing TAS returns
    • Calculating student contact time
    • Calculating module costing

History / Who is using Swarm

Swarm started development in 2009 as an workload planning system for the College of Engineering, Mathematics and Physical Sciences at Exeter University. Following the successful implementation in the single college, Swarm has been further expanded with features suggested from other colleges, and is now rolled out throughout the University.

Changes in TRAC/TAS guidence means that the Unviersity can use the data within Swarm to inform their TAS/TRAC returns.

We are working with other Universities as well as Exeter to arrange trials of the software at various institutions. Please contact us so that we may put you in touch with the right person.
